The design philosophy of landscape architect Vladimir Sitta, from design group Room 4.1.3, is based on the premise that the Earth’s surface is a non-renewable resource. Cities should be self-sustaining. They should restore the natural damage they have created by dedicating their built surfaces to the creation of a constructed nature. Vladimir presents amazingly diverse examples of roof gardens and planted walls and resolves common misconceptions about the disadvantages of using vegetation on or near architectural surfaces. A variety of commercially available, propriety roof garden and planted wall systems are presented.
