Without a logical design method, the infinite number of contributing factors that require consideration when planning a region or city can seem overwhelming. Liam Proberts, of Fairweather Proberts Architects, outlines a simple but effective method for analysing a region or city and effectively replanning it. This method is based on certain “core values,” such as “diversity,” “legibility,” and “sense of place.” Liam demonstrates how he has applied this planning method to Brisbane’s West End peninsular and the Zhongzhai Wan precinct in Xiamen, China.

Fairweather Proberts was formed with the merger of Liam’s and Paul Fairweather’s practices in 1996. Since that time, Fairweather Proberts has grown to become a leader in residential design in Queensland. In more recent times, Fairweather Proberts has broadened its expertise in the areas of Commercial, Retail and Hospitality Design.
As a practice Fairweather Proberts has been involved in some of Queensland’s and Australia’s leading and most awarded developments including:
- Abitare Apartments, Brisbane;
- Catalina Riverfront Houses;
- Saville Hotel Southbank;
- The Kelvin Grove Urban Village;
- Bright Point Apartments, Magnetic Island; and
- National Police Memorial, Canberra.
Fairweather Proberts’ approach to design is to understand the context of every project, to listen to their clients’ needs and develop highly creative, yet commercial design solutions for each project. Liam provides direction in the design of Fairweather Proberts architecture through nurturing a vibrant and inclusive design culture, with a strong focus on the process of design. Liam’s leadership is based in his strong experience in the delivery of notable projects and an active involvement in the design process.
Liam has a strong involvement in wider design fields through contributions to urban and sustainable design. In 2004, his Co27 Remote Living Cell concept was awarded the RAIA Qld Planning and Research Commendation.
