In this course Bernard provides a refreshing and persuasive argument about the implementation of sustainable design and identifies the issues that architects, planners and designers can and should address. He describes the current status of sustainable building and the relationship between the manufacturers, builders, designers and consumers. He provides information about the variety of tools available to achieve sustainable buildings, and identifies the key areas to be addressed by architects and designers in attaining a goal of low and zero environmental impact housing.
Nigel Bell is a pioneer of waste avoidance and smart resource utilisation. In this talk Nigel explores the history of waste minimisation programs in Australia and the gradual move from ‘downstream’ waste management, to ‘upstream’ utilisation of cradle-to-cradle construction materials. He strongly advocates a leadership role for Designers and Architects in achieving environmentally sustainable building outcomes through the resource efficiency of smart design.
In this presentation Jane explores the social and design history of housing for people with a disability and sets out the new concept of ‘Lifetime Housing’. She highlights the legislative requirements with which planners, architects, and designers must comply in the public environment, and the long-term necessity for universal housing design in meeting the needs of our ageing population. She leverages her experience as a professional in the issues of accessibility to public buildings, and discusses the ‘Top 10’ design features that go towards creating lifetime homes.
This presentation provides a wake-up call for the design community to begin now to address the pressing issue of housing for the ‘baby boomer’ generation.
