Recorded live in the offices of Tonkin Zulaika Greer, Peter Tonkin describes the intricate process of the design of meaningful commemorative artworks. He presents three well-known memorials, designed by his firm, TZG. All three commissions were won in design competitions and were designed in collaboration with prominent Australian artists. The fine points of memorial design are revealed as Peter describes the collaborative design process, the design competition process, construction issues and the satisfaction of the final memorial opening ceremony.

Since graduating in Architecture with first class honours in 1977, Peter Tonkin has achieved a wide range of highly successful projects. Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects, formed in 1987, has expertise in many building types and a leading reputation for design and constructional excellence, reflected in the 38 major design awards and competitions won by the practice since 1991.
Peter Tonkin's major projects include the competition winning design for the National Memorial to the Australian Vietnam Forces, the Australian War Memorial in London, a major installation of sound walls and a new gateway on a 23km extension of the Hume Freeway in Melbourne, and the $120m Public Domain at Sydney Olympic Park, the focus of which are the 19 solar-powered Plaza Lighting Towers.
Heritage work has included the 1999 refurbishment of Sydney Customs House, the Hyde Park Barracks Museum, the Sir Henry Parkes School of Arts in Tenterfield and the Casula Powerhouse Regional Arts Centre.
