Kim Crestani, of Order Architects, was an advisor on the Inner West Council’s Design Review panel, on residential flat buildings and SEPP 65 legislation. In her lecture, Kim provides an overview of those apartment building design principles, addressed in SEPP 65, which she considers to be of greatest importance. An interview is conducted with Kim regarding her experiences as an advisor on the SEPP 65 panel. Insight, into the purpose and workings of SEPP 65 panels, is provided. The roles, that architects, developers and councilors play in the design, approval and construction of apartment buildings, are discussed. By referring to apartment buildings, designed by Order Architects, and her experiences while reviewing residential buildings by other architects and designers, Kim is able to give a thorough understanding of all the factors which contribute to successful apartment design.

Kim Crestani

Managing Director of Order Architects

Kim Crestani formed Order Architects in 1984. Kim manages the practice and focuses on client liaison, design, presentations and development opportunities. Apartment building design is one of many areas of expertise of Order Architects.

In 2001, the Minister of Urban Affairs and Planning Andrew Refshauge appointed Kim to the Inner West Council’s Design Review panel as an advisor on the design of residential flat buildings and SEPP 65 legislation.

With 25 years experience in the industry Kim is often invited to judge in architectural competitions. She was a juror in the Housing Industry Association Awards and has judged awards for Ryde and Wollongong City councils. In 2001 Kim was invited to judge the NSW Chapter of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) architectural awards. In 1996 she was also a member of the Board of Architects national accreditation visiting panel to RMIT. Kim is currently a judge for the UDIA NSW Awards 2004/2005.

Kim sits on a number of advisory panels. She is one of three architects who make up the Design Review Panel for the new Parramatta Rail Link- a New South Wales government initiative to increase the capacity of the Sydney metropolitan rail network. Kim was also a member of the NSW Ministerial Task Force for Affordable Housing and is a current member of the Home Building Advisory Council of the Department of Fair Trading.

In 1994, Kim was appointed Vice President of marketing and information at the RAIA. Kim was also western Sydney’s RAIA representative for the Sydney 2000 Olympic bid and Order Architects were part of the consortium that designed the Olympic village, Newington.

Kim was a studio design tutor and lecturer at The University of Technology for 7 years and is a guest lecturer at Sydney University and The University of New South Wales.
