Internationally acclaimed architect, Ricardo Legorreta begins with a meditation on what he defines as great architecture. His birthplace, Mexico, has had a profound influence on his work, physically, mentally and spiritually. The continuum of architectural thought in the central and south American regions is clearly shown in the pre-Columbian examples he discusses. Critical elements such as Entry, Water, Wall, Man, Space and Colour are discussed in detail.
Examples of his work included in the presentation include the Library of San Antonio in Texas, Pershing Square in Los Angeles, California, the MARCO Museum of Contempory Art, the Cathedral of Managua in Nicaragua as well as residential projects in Mexico, Brazil and Costa Rica.

During his 45-year career, Legorreta has successfully integrated interior design, landscape architecture, and architecture into a single discipline. His architecture, attuned to the land and respectful of Latin American traditions of privacy and simplicity, has won widespread and international acclaim. By mastering the spectrum of the building process, he has created structures possessing uncanny colour and light, structures that marry monumentality and tradition.
Born in Mexico City, Legorreta studied architecture at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico and established his firm, Legoretta Arquitectos, in 1959. His early projects included the Camino Real Hotel in Cancun, offices for IBM, and the Kodak laboratories in his native country. Outside of Mexico, the residence of Hollywood actor Ricardo Montalban served as his first important commission. The firm's current design commissions include the Mexican Museum in San Francisco, Hispanic Cultural Arts Center in Dallas, and the Bank of Finance in Managua, Nicaragua.
Throughout his career, Legorreta has earned numerous honours and awards, including the prestigious Premo Nacional de las Artes, awarded by the President of Mexico, and the Gold Medal of the International Union of Architects as well as the American Institute of Architects.
