In this course, recorded as a part of their national tour of Australia during August 2005, NATSPEC addresses the importance and role of good specification writing for architects, engineers, building designers, landscape architects and interior designers. Noel Burke, an architect with extensive experience in architectural design and construction, here in Australia as well as overseas, discusses specification writing in Australia and the use of NATSPEC in the preparation of construction specifications, providing many examples from his own experience. He also discusses the options of specifying by performance, prescription or proprietary (direct) methods. He introduces the changed NATSPEC classification system and talks briefly about how to develop and use office edited work sections from Specbuilder Pro, NATSPEC’s fully featured specification product.

NATSPEC, founded in 1975, is a not-for-profit organisation that is owned by the design, build, construct and property industry through the shareholdings of professional associations and government property groups. NATSPEC’s major service is production of the comprehensive national specification system endorsed by government and professional bodies. The specification is for all building structures, with specialised packages for architects, interior designers, landscape architects, structural engineers, service engineers and domestic owners.
This course is delivered by Noel Burke. Noel is an architect with extensive experience in architectural design and construction, here in Australia as well as overseas. He is currently involved with the development of NATSPEC services and so is intimate with the content of the specification documentation delivered by NATSPEC. He also understands the practical day-today use of this material. Noel provides a unique perspective from both inside the architect’s office as well as from the practical construction point of view.
