Jane Bringolf is the Executive Director of Independent Living Centre, NSW. In this presentation Jane explores the social and design history of housing for people with a disability and sets out the new concept of ‘Lifetime Housing’. She highlights the legislative requirements with which planners, architects, and designers must comply in the public environment, and the long-term necessity for universal housing design in meeting the needs of our ageing population. She leverages her experience as a professional in the issues of accessibility to public buildings, and discusses the ‘Top 10’ design features that go towards creating lifetime homes.

This presentation provides a wake-up call for the design community to begin now to address the pressing issue of housing for the ‘baby boomer’ generation.

Jane Bringolf

Jane Bringolf has a background in community services spanning more than twenty five years and holds a degrees in Social Science and Business Administration. Her experience ranges from direct service provision to senior management roles. A recipient of a Churchill Fellowship in 2004, Jane travelled overseas to investigate organisations pursuing universal design, accessible environments and assistive technology. Jane's eight years with her current employer, Independent Living Centre NSW adds to her experience of working in the aged and disability sectors.

Current trends in public policy are moving towards making built environments suited to people of all ages and abilities, posing new challenges for designers. Understanding the intent of the Disability Discrimination Act and how it works with the BCA can help resolve accessibility design issues for new and existing buildings.
