This module, the third in a series of NatHERS training programs provided through eClassroom.com.au, explains the methodology for using NatHERS in relation to multi-unit housing projects.

Professor Ballinger recaps the basic points of data entry into the NatHERS software and explains how to modify the data entered for a single unit type into a number of units of similar type within the same building or development. The role of the ‘neighbour’, which is critical to the correct application of NatHERS in this environment, is explained in detail.

Two case studies are explored in the module:

  1. A 15 story apartment building with 14x8 units and an open breezeway at ground level. Each unit is rated as a separate dwelling and the common areas are left unrated.
  2. A split-level ‘off-set’ apartment layout including a central access corridor on every second level, which allows cross ventilation for each unit.

Note: This module assumes prior knowledge of data entry and the modelling of single story detached cottages – Reference Course JB0512: An Introduction to NatHERS

Learning outcomes:

By the completion of this unit you will:

    • Learn about data entry to the NatHERS Software tool and the use of the ‘neighbour’ element in your data for multi-unit housing
    • Be familiar with the development of simulations of multi-unit dwellings and the associated problems
    • Have a comprehensive understanding of the rating system which quantifies thermal comfort in order to ensure an environment which is suitable for the occupation, function and environmental parameters of a multi-unit development
    • Have a clear view of the various factors which effect the energy rating of multi-unit residential housing

Course Duration:  00:51:20

Assessment:  10 Multiple choice questions
