Learning outcomes:

At the completion of this course you will:

  • Understand how the impact of the design concept upon the environment and the community is assesed and heeded.
  • Have a thorough understanding of the principles of Solar Access and Overshadowing Assessment in building design.
  • Be aware of the technical basis for constructing shadow diagrams that are useful for design development and Council submissions.
  • Understand the available tools with their capacities, advantages and disadvantages.
  • Understand what the Council requires and the appropriate ways to fulfill the requirements.
  • With increased confidence, have an awareness of the manner in which issues of Solar Access and Overshadowing can be improved, through architectural design, in the wider community.

  • Develop an understanding of how Geohazards affect site conditions, site related requirements and limitation for a project.
  • Understand the basic types of Geohazards applicable to sites around Australia.
  • Appreciate the services provided by a specialist Geohazard consultant and how these services can assist the overall project outcome.
  • Understand what remedial activity is possible to overcome common Geohazards, allowing site development.
  • Appreciate how location and history affect the potential Geohazards on any particular site irrespective of its general location.
