Dimitri Young explores the detailed world of the Threatened Species Conservation Act, its corresponding legislation and the NSW Environmental Planning and Assessment Act. He identifies what has recently changed in this legislation – in particular the new assessment guidelines and the creation of a Priorities Action Statement (PAS) for each endangered species or ecological community. Dmitri discusses the Biodiversity Certification of Environmental Planning Instruments and the availability of DEC accreditation for consultants, ensuring standardisation across the field.

Once the laws have been grasped, the presentation examines the techniques used to find a solution for a site with ecological constraints. Dmitri uses case studies to ensure a detailed understanding of the preliminary site surveys. Solutions to buffer zones are considered by utilising multi-purpose bushfire Asset Protection Zones (APZ). By maximising survey efficacy and ensuring the use of ‘contextualisation’, Dmitri illustrates how an ecological solution can be identified even in seemingly impossible situations. Finally he demonstrates the web-based biodiversity conservation assessment tools available to all designers.
